Oh what a city! It is no wonder Zagreb has made it on several hot-spot lists this past year. After a two-week stay, I can see why Lonely Planet selected Zagreb as the #1 European destination pick for 2017. Not only is Zagreb economical, it is filled with art, culture, traditions, and a full cup of Croatian pride. This is truly an unforgettable city.
If you enjoy relaxing in a city that offers great coffee (everywhere and I do mean everywhere), wonderful art and culture scenes, beautiful parks, and a keen sense of fashion then Zagreb is the city for you. An added benefit is Zagreb is easy to travel by foot or tram. Oh yeah, and did I mention the food and wine...amazing and affordable!
Although I had family in Zagreb, I rented a flat right off of Petar Preradović Square or "Flower Square". This was a wonderful location that put me in the heart of the old city, and I could walk most everywhere. The flat ran me $65.00 USD per night. Along with being in a great location, the flat came with a full kitchen, washer / dryer, 1 bed, and two sleeper sofas. The flat was an AirBnb.com find. One thing my landlords left out of the description was that every day at noon, you will jump about 10 feet in the air when the Lotrščak Tower in upper-town fires the cannon. I continued to tell myself tomorrow I would not jump out of my skin, but it never failed as I flinched every day at noon.
To have a full kitchen was great, being that it was a five-minute walk to the open market. There you will find fresh local fruits and veggies, going underground you can find meats and cheeses, and just across the way is a building full of fresh sea food. Just be sure to go early so you get the best of all these goodies.
Zagreb is filled with little hidden treasures, so if you see a little alleyway or tunnel take it as you never know what you might find. In addition, as a solo female traveler I never felt uneasy. This town was warm and welcoming, and felt as safe as I heard it to be.
If you get the opportunity to visit Zagreb, don't pass it up because it is worth the trip! Oh yeah, and don't forget to drink the coffee! It's not just a beverage, it's a lifestyle.
